Sheldrick Lodges directly supports the work of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust – one of Kenya’s largest private conservation organisations, with a focussed mission to protect wild places for wild life.
For generations, the Sheldrick family has worked in the service of these animals and the place they call home. From David Sheldrick’s foundations as the founder warden of Tsavo National Park, the charity that still bears his namehas grown into an organisation that has rescued, rehabilitated, or assisted over many thousands elephants and other widlife. The Trust is now a key conservation partner across millions of acres of wild land, and is an important anti-poaching force across Kenya.
Funded by special endowments, Sheldrick Lodges offer a unique opportunity to support this work, connect with nature, and step into the rhythm of one of the last wild corners of Kenya – Tsavo.
In 1948, David Sheldrick MBE began his renowned career within the Royal National Parks of Kenya, where he worked unwaveringly for over two decades transforming Tsavo, a previously unchartered and inhospitable land, into Kenya’s largest and most famous National Park. David Sheldrick stands out, even today, as one of Africa’s most famous and proficient pioneer National Park Wardens.
For over 25 years Kenya-born Daphne Sheldrick lived and worked alongside David. She founded the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust following his passing in 1977. Today, the Trust is supported across the globe as it continued David and Daphne’s mission of proactive conservation in Kenya.
Today, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust operates across Kenya, with an expansive mission to make good on the promise of past generations. It’s key projects include anti-poaching, safe guarding the natural environment, enhancing community awareness, addressing animal welfare issues, providing veterinary assistance to animals in need, rescuing and hand rearing elephant and rhino orphans, along with other species that can ultimately enjoy a quality of life in wild terms when grown.
The Trust remains a family matter, and is now led by David and Daphne’s daughter, Angela, along with her husband, Robert Carr-Hartley, and their two sons. Together with many hundreds of team members in Kenya and across the world, their mission remains the same, albeit with a nation-wide scope.
Sheldrick Lodges emerged from a desire to deepen the connection our community felt with nature, and host supporters from across the globe in the wilds of Tsavo. Even today, we ask that guests at our lodges are current supporters of orphaned elephants. Our hope is that these lodges act as havens for our guests – beautiful basecamps where they can explore the wonders of nature.
Our collection of lodges continues to grow across Tsavo and beyond. Each one has its own unique impact on the land, wildlife, and community around it. Take our lodge at Umani Springs, in the Kibweze Forest. The lodge site plays host to our most vulnerable orphans – but beyond this immediate impact, our regeneration of the surrounding forest has created a new home for countless species, and substantially increased rainfall in the region. Local farmers are able to yield better crops, wildlife is able to thrive, and our guests are able to enjoy a verdant haven in the wild.
Simply by staying in our properties, you are directly supporting these elephants and the ecosystems they call home. Operated through a not-for-profit model and funded by special endowments, all proceeds from our lodges support vital conservation projects in the area.

Sheldrick Lodges are reimagining the luxury safari for conscious travellers. Our private lodges are dotted across four distinct locations within Tsavo Conservation Area, offering guests a gateway into the last great wild corner of Kenya. Sheldrick’s intimate safari experiences, warm and attentive team, and understated soulful luxury combine to offer guests a grounding yet absorbing experience. Blending high touch hospitality with a decades-long commitment to wildlife conservation, our properties don’t merely give back, they act as agents of change for the ecosystems they sit in. And because our non-profit lodges are the first in Kenya to directly support conservation work, each guest leaves knowing their stay benefits one of Africa’s oldest conservation organisations, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
