Soulful travel,

about us

Sheldrick Lodges directly supports the work of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, one of Kenya’s original private conservation organisations — now 50 years old — with a focussed mission to protect wild places for wild life.

The Trust’s legacy dates back to 1948, when David Sheldrick MBE began his celebrated career within the Royal National Parks of Kenya. For over two decades, he worked tirelessly to transform Tsavo — a previously uncharted wilderness — into Kenya’s largest and most famous National Park. He remains one of Africa’s most respected wardens.

For over 25 years, Kenya-born Daphne Sheldrick lived and worked alongside David. Following his passing in 1977, she founded the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to build upon his vision. Daphne was a pioneer in wildlife rehabilitation and became the first person in the world to successfully raise an orphaned African elephant, establishing the celebrated Orphans’ Project that continues to this day.

Today, the Trust is led by their daughter Angela Sheldrick, together with her husband, Robert Carr-Hartley, and their two sons. The family legacy continues to expand the mission David and Daphne began, now with a reach that extends across Kenya.

The Trust’s work spans anti-poaching, habitat protection, community engagement, veterinary assistance, and the rescue and rehabilitation of orphaned elephants, rhinos, and other wildlife. Hundreds of dedicated team members work across Kenya and around the world to protect wild places and the creatures that depend on them.

Sheldrick Lodges emerged from a desire to deepen the connection our community felt with our conservation work, and to welcome supporters from across the globe into the wilds of Tsavo. Our hope is that these lodges serve as beautiful basecamps from which to explore the wonders of the natural world.

Our collection of lodges continues to grow across the Tsavo ecosystem, each with its own unique impact on the land, wildlife, and communities around it. Umani Springs, for instance, is home to our most vulnerable orphans — but its impact reaches far beyond. Our regeneration of the surrounding forest has created pristine habitat for countless species and substantially increased rainfall in the region, allowing local farmers to yield better crops and wildlife to thrive in a landscape that continues to heal. This is just one example of the impact of Sheldrick Lodges — an impact supported by your stay.
